Comments from Judges:

Index No 1: Moral Home For The Aged Sick
Simple and ideal for printing on T-shirt; but message targeted on elderly is unclear because it can be appropriate for health promotion program.

Index No 2: Brighthill Evergreen Home
The design is artistic, simple and mature; and it’s meaning is also well thought through and articulated but graphics may not be immediately interpreted without the explanatory notes.

Index No 3: Kreta Ayer
Message of the design is clear and humorous. However, it does not include the title/words stipulated in the design requirement.

Index No 4: All Saints Home (Tampines)
The design is well expressed, with bright colour, humor, joy and clear message. However, it may be further simplified so as to facilitate printing on the T-shirt.

Theme of design
The design intends for simplicity and with little abstraction. Targeting towards the elderly and volunteers of a great diversity, we find it appropriate for the design to be simple and thus easy to be understood.

Choice of tree
Throughout history, tree worship has not been uncommon among religions and in cultural practices. Trees are generally seen as sacred, a symbol of immortality and fertility, and even in the modern context, there is the concept of the tree of life.

Symbol of strength and resilience
A tree symbolizes strength, in staying put in the most extreme climatic conditions, its firm base allowing it to strive in any environment. Our design of a tree represents resilience in life, to not give up, to overcome the difficulties that we may face and to always be forward-looking. With this inner strength, there will be more vigour in life where we will be willing to learn more skills and geared up to take up new challenges. In this aspect, only then can we grow and lead a fulfilled life, that ties in with the theme of the T-shirt design ‘Adding Life to Years! Happy, Healthy, Active Seniors’.

Symbol of eternal life and wisdom
A tree symbolizes life and growth, where its roots reach down to the ground and the branches up to the sky at the same time. A tree symbolizes great wisdom, an attainment of great age and maturity. In incorporating a tree into our design, we acknowledge and respect the elderly for their age and wisdom. In addition, trees such as the olive branch signify peace. In the design, the tree thus carries our blessings towards the elderly for eternal life and good health.

Choice of words
As with the theme of simplicity in our design, we directly quoted the phrase of ‘adding life to years’, where the message it sends through is clear and straightforward.

Choice of font
We wanted the words to appear somewhat lively and funky, to denotes the idea of living happily, healthily and actively. The font of the word ‘life’ is bolder and is also of a larger font size. It is our intention to add more volume in the appearance of the word, which in turn suggests a greater depth to the meaning of life itself, where we hope to emphasize the importance in healthy aging.

ESN Carnival 2009

Dear Volunteer Leader/Coordinator,

Re: Proposal for Carnival 2009 for Elderly

With the successful and positive responses gathered from elderly and volunteers for ESN Carnival 2008, once again, the committee members of Elderly Sector Network (ESN) is organizing ESN Carnival 2009 for beneficiaries from various voluntary welfare agencies for elderly this coming September, tentatively planned on the 05/09/09, Saturday, from 2pm to 4.30pm.

The main objective of the carnival is to infuse a sense of togetherness as a community of volunteers serving the elderly sector, to promote sharing, interactions and learning among volunteers and beneficiaries alike, and to provide an afternoon of beyond volunteering experience of fun, cheer and company to the elderly by the combined efforts of volunteers.

It is going to be a fun and interactive event comprising of carnival stalls (food, craft, games and bazaar), activities such as photo-taking with mascot and a mini-concert, and last but not least, lucky draw where the beneficiaries get to walk away with goodies such as grocery items and other basic necessities. In addition, prior to the carnival, there will be a T-shirt design competition, which we hope that volunteers from all participating agencies will be able to take part. More details will be released at a later date.

We also hope to engage volunteers and beneficiaries from your agency to participate not only as visitors to the carnival, but also to set up stalls, and showcase their talents during the concert.

Therefore, we will like to invite around 10-15 beneficiaries from your agency to come down and enjoy the carnival. In addition, we will like to invite your volunteers to set up 1-2 stalls and put up 1-2 performance items during the concert. A reply form is attached for your completion. Please return the reply form on or before 6th July 2009.

We sincerely hope you and your fellow volunteers will join us in making the carnival a success and an enjoyable outing for the beneficiaries!
